‘Miskol’ is Filipino word of the year at conference

MANILA, Philippines — THE FILIPINO word “miskol” has outscored “roro” and “friendster” to become the Word of the Year as voted by a group of Filipino language scholars, teachers and students at a recent language conference at the University of the Philippines.
“Miskol” is an adopted Filipino homonym for “miss call”–or a call made to the mobile phone that is not accepted by its receiver.
During a presentation at the Sawikaan: Salita ng Taon Conference, Ateneo De Naga Professor Adrian Remodo, who nominated the word, said a “miskol” is often used as an alternative way to make someone’s presence felt.
